SIG

Session synopsis:

ADEE members with an interest in Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) and entrustment in Dental Education are warmly invited to join the launch of the new SIG on EPAs and entrustment during the ADEE Annual Meeting in Budapest in 2026.

The SIG brings together educators, researchers, and dental schools interested in developing and implementing EPA-based education. It provides a collaborative platform to exchange knowledge, share practical experiences, and discuss challenges related to EPAs, assessment, and entrustment decisions in clinical learning environments.

Building on national and international collaborations and growing interest among dental educators, the SIG aims to support the further development of EPA-based education within dentistry. The SIG will:

facilitate regular meetings and knowledge exchange among members;
share best practices, practical experiences, and examples of EPA implementation;
support educators and institutions in addressing challenges related to entrustment and assessment;
develop and share resources and case examples relevant to dental education;
strengthen collaboration and networking among dental schools and educators working with or interested in EPAs.

Together, the SIG aims to contribute to meaningful implementation of EPAs and support students’ development towards professional autonomy and readiness for clinical practice.

Wietske Fokkinga

Program leader of revision of the Bachelor curriculum

Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre, Department of Dentistry

Dr. Wietske Fokkinga is Associate Professor, Leader in Education, course director, and lecturer in undergraduate dental education at Radboud University Medical Center. She has been involved in the development, implementation, and evaluation of Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) since 2017. She was co-promotor of the PhD project of Dr. Elske Hissínk on EPAs and adaptive expertise.

Further, she led the revision of the Bachelor of Dentistry curriculum and served for twelve years as Chair of the Educational Committee. Alongside her academic and educational responsibilities, she practices restorative dentistry at the Centre for Complex Dentistry, providing referral-based patient care.

Wietske is faculty member of the international online EPA course and has been involved in national and international initiatives on EPA implementation in dental education, including workshops and lectures on working with entrustment and EPAs in dental education.

Christina Gummesson

Associate Professor

Malmö University

She completed her PhD in Physiotherapy 2003 and Master in Medical Education 2013. She was appointed “excellent teaching practitioner” 2008 and has extensive experience on curriculum design and course development for undergraduate-, graduate- and research education.

She has worked with faculty development since 2008 and was the Director of the Centre for Teaching and Learning at the Medical Faculty, Lund University Sweden, 2015-20. Since 2020, she has been working at the Department of Odontology Malmö University, Sweden as a Senior Lecturer in Medical Education, where one of the main areas of her work involves development of professionalism, professional autonomy and independence.

Apart from teaching and own research, she also serves as a Senior Editor in Physical Therapy Reviews, is a Member of the Editorial Board in BMC Medical Education and act as reviewer in various journals in medical education.

Elske Hissink

PhD candidate “Development of adaptive expertise in an EPA based curriculum”

Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre, Department of Dentistry

Dr. Elske Hissink is an educationalist and researcher in dental education at Radboudumc, Nijmegen, the Netherlands.

She has a background in educational sciences and extensive experience in curriculum development, assessment, and innovation in health professions education. Her research focuses on the implementation of Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs), entrustment decision-making, and the development of clinical learning environments that support students’ transition towards professional autonomy.

Elske completed her PhD research on adaptive expertise and EPA-based education in 2026 and has been involved in national and international initiatives on EPA implementation in dental education. She is faculty member of the international online EPA course. In addition to her research activities, she contributes to faculty development, educational innovation, and workshops on EPAs and competency-based education.

Nina Lundegren

Senior Lecturer

Malmö University, Malmö, Sweden.

Nina Lundegren is a senior lecturer at Malmö University, Malmö, Sweden. With a two-year master's degree in teaching and learning in higher education and an interest in Challenge-Based Learning, she works with educational and curricular development as program director for the dentistry program at Malmö University. She has been implementing learning activities on sustainability in dentistry into the new curricula.
