Award Criteria

Each award has a application form and specific criteria, Ensure you apply for the correct awards programme by reviewing the criteria for the Early Career Educators, Mature Educators, the ADEE Oral B Intra/Inter-professional Educators and the ADEE Haleon Preventative Oral Health in Society Award.

Individual schools may support the submission of a maximum of two applications per year in any combination of the four categories. The information submitted should be in accordance with the directions provided in the application form.

Early Career Educators

Applicants should submit a portfolio that contains a brief Curriculum Vitae, reflective commentary (which includes self-evaluation and identification of the need for continuing self-development in education) upon the following aspects of their claim for the award:

  • Minimum of 3 years and no more than 8 years as a dental educator.
  • Evidence of continuous engagement with dental education.
  • Evidence of particular strengths and/or innovation in one or more areas of dental education (e.g. chair-side teaching; lecturing; small group teaching; development of innovative educational material; assessment; curriculum development; student support; participation and noteworthy contribution to ADEE/DentEd working groups or Special Interest Groups; collaboration in grant applications for pedagogical research and/or development).
  • Evidence of educational organisation and management responsibility in own institution (e.g. organiser for a particular year or topic within the dental curriculum).
  • A list of papers authored or co-authored concerned with dental education (using Harvard style referencing). 
  • Evidence of participation in educational events (e.g. attendance +/- presentation of paper or poster at ADEE meeting; attendance+/- presentation of paper or poster at least one other educational meeting such as the Education Research Group of IADR). 
  • Evidence of local and national collaboration in educational activities. 
  • Evidence of basic training as a dental educator (e.g. attendance at teachers' events; successful completion of ADEE educational courses; successful completion of a Postgraduate Certificate in Education).
  • Evidence of local or national esteem.
  • Applicants should be active in dental education.
  • Attendance (and preferably presentation of paper or poster) at at-least one ADEE meeting.

Applicants should comply with the word limits indicated on the Application Form.

The Portfolio should include a letter of support from the Dean or Head of school and from the lead for learning and teaching in their school and university where it is appropriate. 

Applicants should also express their willingness to present a poster or paper at the following year’s ADEE annual meeting, and to respond to questionnaires circulated by EDEAC from time to time. (Deans of schools should recognise this requirement for continuing commitment to ADEE and enable their award holder to attend future ADEE meetings).  Successful candidates will be presented to the ADEE Annual General Assembly where they will receive an ADEE Early Career Educators Certificate and a commemorative award.

Mature Educators

Applicants should submit a portfolio that contains a brief Curriculum Vitae, reflective commentary (which includes self-evaluation and identification of the need for continuing self-development in education) upon the following aspects of their claim for the award: 

  • Minimum of 9 years as a dental educator.
  • Evidence of continuous engagement with dental education.
  • Evidence of particular strengths and/or innovation in one or more areas of dental education (e.g. chair-side teaching; lecturing; small group teaching; development of innovative educational material; assessment; curriculum development; participation and noteworthy contribution to ADEE/DentEd working groups or Special Interest Groups; leadership or collaboration in applications for grants for pedagogical research and/or development).
  • Evidence of a leadership role in educational activity (e.g. chair of curriculum committee in home institution; leader /senior member of a postgraduate learning and teaching course; membership of national educational committee; holder of office in specialist society such as European Orthodontic Society).
  • Evidence of pedagogical support for junior members of staff.
  • Evidence of national and international educational collaboration.
  • A list of papers authored or co-authored concerned with dental education (using Harvard style referencing).
  • Evidence of participation in educational events (e.g. attendance +/- presentation of paper or poster at ADEE meeting; attendance at +/- presentation of paper or poster to at least one other prestigious educational meeting such as the Education Research Group of IADR).
  • Evidence of basic training as a dental educator (e.g. attendance at teachers' events; successful completion of a Postgraduate Certificate in Education).
  • Other evidence of national or international esteem.
  • Applicants should be active in dental education
  • Attendance and presentation of a paper or poster at at-least two ADEE meetings.
  • A list of papers authored or co-authored concerned with research on dental education (using Harvard style referencing).

Applicants should comply with the word limits indicated on the Application Form.

The Portfolio should include a letter of support from the Dean or Head of School, the Learning and Teaching lead in the university (where appropriate) and from at least one other senior member of the profession who is external to the applicant’s school and who is in a position to comment on the individual’s contribution to learning and teaching in the profession.

Applicants should also express their willingness to present a poster or paper at the following year’s ADEE annual meeting, and to respond to questionnaires circulated by EDEAC from time to time.

Successful candidates will be presented to the ADEE Annual General Assembly where they will receive an ADEE Mature Educators Certificate and a commemorative award.

ADEE ORAL B Intra/Inter-professional Educator Award

In Collaboration with our Platinum Partner P&G, ADEE is pleased to invite applications for the ADEE ORAL B Intra/Inter-professional Educator Award.  This award is aimed at fostering and developing academic careers within the Oral Health Education environment particularly those who are engaged in inter-professional education of the dental professions.  It has a focus on recognition of evolving excellence in inter professional dental/oral health education as a means of exemplifying best practice.  The award provides a platform for communicating best practice throughout the ADEE community and further afield.

To be eligible for consideration applicants must demonstrate that they have: 

  1. A minimum of 3 years as a dental/oral health educator.
  2. Evidence of continuous engagement with dental/oral health education.
  3. Evidence of particular strengths and/or innovation in one or more areas of dental/oral health education as it applies to intra/inter professional dental education (e.g. chair-side teaching; lecturing; small group teaching; development of innovative educational material; assessment; curriculum development; student support; participation and noteworthy contribution to ADEE/DentEd working groups or Special Interest Groups or in similar European level associations; collaboration in grant applications for pedagogical research and/or development).
  4. Evidence of educational organisation and management responsibility in own institution (e.g. organiser for a particular inter professional topic within the dental/oral health curriculum).
  5. A list of papers authored or co-authored concerned with dental/oral health education (using Harvard style referencing) published in journals such as the European Journal of Dental Education (EJDE), Journal of Dental Education (JDE), International Journal of Dental Hygiene (IJDH) or similar publications.
  6. Evidence of participation in educational events (e.g. attendance +/- presentation of paper or poster at ADEE meeting; attendance+/- presentation of paper or poster at least one other educational meeting such as the Education Research Group of IADR, Internal Dental Hygienst Federation, European Dental Hygienist Federation, British Dental Nurse Association etc etc).
  7. Evidence of local and national collaboration in oral health educational activities. 
  8. Evidence of basic training as a dental/oral health educator (e.g. attendance at teachers' events; successful completion of ADEE educational courses; successful completion of a Postgraduate Certificate in Education).
  9. Applicants should be active in the professions of oral health education.
  10. Attendance (and preferably presentation of paper or poster) at at-least one ADEE meeting, workshop, special interest group etc.

ADEE-HALEON Preventative Oral Health in Society Award

Drawing on our three year experience with delivery of the Dentistry in Society Scholarship project, ADEE and HALEON are now taking a more focused approach to the delivery of our collaborative project. Given that the concept of Dentistry in Society is so broad and a challenge to many institution particularly in Eastern Europe, from 2021 onwards the awards will be more focused and specific in nature. From 2021 we will deliver the ADEE HALEON Preventative Oral Health in Society Award, which would identify and highlight projects of particular interest that embrace the concepts of preventative health promotion, and public health elements of the curriculum experience.

We are particularly interested in applications which demonstrate how the institution enables the role of Preventative Oral healthcare by:

  1. incorporating  within their curriculum and practice 
  2. encouraging students to appreciate aspects such as local and regional health needs, their variations and implications of health economics and how this impacts perceptions on preventative dental care
  3. encouraging a whole health approach within their curriculum including but not limited to encouraging inter professional care and the role this plays in preventative oral healthcare 
  4. including local population prevention needs within their curriculum and encourage students to take a holistic approach to defining and delivering patient care
  5. ensuring health promotion (oral and whole health) is not only encouraged but facilitated through the curriculum and how such activities within the curriculum is impacting on local populations
  6. encouraging an ethos of equity of access within their students practice
  7. integrating wider oral and public health issues within their curriculum

Thanks to the generous support of HALEON a financial pool if €5,000 is being made available for distribution . 

This award is in recognition of work and projects that have been completed and that can demonstrate impacts in the area of interest or that are planned and already self financed. Delivery of the project should not be dependent upon receipt of this award. 

To be eligible for consideration applicants must demonstrate that they have: 

  1. Clearly demonstrate the projects aims and objective and how they have been achieved or will be monitored 
  2. Provide evidence of associated costings
  3. Provide evidence of the promotion of the project and its impact
  4. Provide a clear rationale for the project and how this will enable the ethos of preventative oral healthcare within society
  5. Applications are only open to ADEE institutional members 
  6. Applicants must have the written support of the Dean or Head of school
