Carlos Serrano

Chair of Digital Dentistry and General Oral Care
Academic Center for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA), The Netherlands

Dr. Carlos M. Serrano graduated as a dentist (DDS) from the University of Concepción in Chile in 2004. He obtained his master's degree in medical education (MMedEd) in 2010 and completed his specialty in Prosthodontics (MClinPros) in 2012. In 2023, he received his PhD, with research focused on the applications of extended reality (XR) and digital dentistry in dental education.

Since 2015, Carlos has been a member of ACTA’s Digital Dentistry department, where he specializes in the development and integration of digital technologies into dental education and patient care. He has also been actively involved in the Association for Dental Education in Europe (ADEE) since 2015, contributing to the international advancement of digital dentistry education. His work with ADEE includes developing and promoting initiatives that enhance the integration of emerging digital technologies into dental curricula, as well as collaborating with international institutions to improve dental education standards.

Carlos is also actively involved in research and dental education, particularly at the intersection of digital dentistry and extended reality, with a focus on reshaping the future of dental education and clinical practice.

Simona-Georgiana Schick

Senior Consultant at the Department of Conservative Dentistry

Dr. med. dent. Simona-Georgiana Schick, MME, is Senior Consultant at the Department of Conservative Dentistry, Heidelberg University Hospital, and has been Head of HeiCuDent Department at the Heidelberg Medical Faculty since 2024.

Her work focuses on the strategic advancement of dental education and the didactically meaningful integration of digital technologies into teaching, practical training, and assessment formats. She has been instrumental in driving the implementation of the new German licensing regulations (ZApprO) at the Heidelberg University and is a core member of the HeiCheck development team, contributing to conception and further development of digital solutions supporting teaching, assessment and documentation. The aim of her work is to integrate digital innovations not as isolated tools, but as part of modern, competency-based and clinically relevant educational concepts.

Ilse R. de Boer

Dentist, Researcher, and Educator
Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA

Dr. Ilse Renée de Boer is a dentist, researcher, and educator affiliated with the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA) in the Netherlands. In November 2017, Dr. de Boer obtained her PhD from the University of Amsterdam with a dissertation focused on the implementation and validation of the Simodont, a virtual learning environment for dental education. Her research demonstrated that training in a virtual reality (VR) environment enhances students' confidence and competence. She continues to be affiliated to the department of Digital Dentistry as a teacher and researcher and works as a general dentist in practice as well.
