Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is undergoing a rapid transformation from a specialised medical imaging modality into an emerging diagnostic tool for dentistry. Recent technological advances have resulted in dental-dedicated MRI (ddMRI), combining dedicated radiofrequency coils, optimised pulse sequences and streamlined clinical workflows to enable high-quality imaging of both mineralised and soft tissues without ionising radiation.
This lecture will present the technological principles underlying ddMRI, followed by a critical appraisal of the current scientific evidence supporting its diagnostic validity across multiple dental disciplines. Recent studies on endodontics, oral surgery, temporomandibular disorders, orthodontics, implant dentistry and nerve visualisation will be discussed to illustrate the progression from technical feasibility to clinically relevant applications.
The lecture will conclude with a series of clinical cases demonstrating how ddMRI may influence diagnosis, treatment planning and patient management, while highlighting current limitations and future research priorities. Rather than replacing existing imaging modalities, ddMRI will be presented as an emerging complementary technology that broadens the diagnostic information available to clinicians and offers new opportunities for education and interdisciplinary collaboration.
