Session synopsis: 
During the SIG’s, organized by the EHDF in 2023 and 2024, we discussed sustainability, interprofessional collaboration, AI and the points of the WHO Oral Health Action Plan in relation to the Common Education Curriculum (CEC) for dental hygienists (2019). Another discussion was whether research should be added. During SIG 2025 we discussed the first draft of the updated CEC with the above mentioned items.

During a SIG 2026 in Budapest, we want to discuss the second draft of the updated CEC, which has been adjusted using feedback from the SIG 2025 and from the EDHF annual meeting in September 2025. Secondly, in this 2nd draft, a start has been made on adding knowledge and skills, partly in response to feedback during SIG 2025

This project of EDHF is lead by a project group. The projec tgroup consists of Sandra Graça, chair of the education committee of EDHF, Veronica Montebello, treasurer of EDHF and Ellen Bol, president of EDHF. Also the chair of the Taskforce, Jurgita Andruskiene, is part of the project group.

During the SIG 2026 in Budapest, EDHF will present the second draft of the updated CEC. We want to discuss this second draft with the participants of the SIG.

President
European Dental Hygienists Association (EDHF)

Ellen Bol - van den Hil is a registered dental hygienist and since September 2025 president of the European Dental Hygienists Association (EDHF). From 2016 – 2025 she was vice-president of EDHF. In 2017 she was involved in the development of the European Professional Profile for dental hygienists and in 2019 member of the projectgroup for the developing of the Common Education Curriculum for dental hygienists. Currently she is involved in the projectgroup that contributes to the review of this Common Education Curriculum.

She was director of the Dutch Dental Hygienists Association from 2010-2025. In that function she was, together with board en staff, responsible for developing policy and implementing it and for public affairs.

Besides all this she runs her own independent dental hygienist office in the Netherlands and is boardmember of the Oral Care Dispute Resolution body.

Veronica Montebello

Senior lecturer and clinical supervisor
University of Malta

Veronica Montebello is a visiting senior lecturer and clinical supervisor at the University of Malta within the Faculties of Dental Surgery and Health Sciences. A Senior Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy and a registered dental hygienist, she has extensive experience in both public and private healthcare in Malta.

She has contributed significantly to curriculum design, programme development, and healthcare workforce planning, including work on Malta’s National Health Workforce Strategy (2020–2030) through her role within the Ministry for Health. Currently serving as Lead Profession Manager of Dental Hygiene Services in Malta, Veronica is actively involved in European and international initiatives on workforce planning and forecasting, including projects with the WHO and the EU HEROES Joint Action. She is the founder and former president of the Malta Association of Dental Hygiene and currently serves as Treasurer of the EDHF. She also contributes to the review of the Common Education Curriculum for European Dental Hygienists.

Veronica served on the regulatory body, the Council for the Professions Complementary to Medicine and, since 2016, has worked extensively in quality assurance and accreditation as an expert reviewer and chairperson for External Quality Assurance audits and programme accreditation for the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority.

Learning Outcomes: 
  1. To reflect on the suggestions in the second draft of the updated CEC.
  2. CEC is a reflection of what we think is important for the DH of the future. Comply with the contemporary practice of the DH.
