Session synopsis: 

IFDEA invites representatives from International, Regional and other interested parties to engage in this international collaborative session as part of ADEE 2024. During the session invitees will be asked to share their thoughts through group work on the evolving shared understanding of ADEE and ADEA of the priorities needed to enable our members respond in a productive manner to national calls for input on the WHO Action Plan for Oral Health.

Corrado Paganelli DDS, MD is currently chair of the Board of IFDEA (International Federation of Dental Educators and Associations) and FEHDD (Forum of European Heads and Deans of Dental Schools), Former President CECDO (Council of European Chief Dental Officers) and ADEE (Association for Dental Education in Europe). Dean of dental school / clinic, and previously hygienist school and orthodontic program, Erasmus coordinator for medical school at University of Brescia – Italy. President-elect of IADR Nutrition group. He also chairs the dental expert panel (Expamed) for the EU Commission of the Regulation (EU) 2017/745 on Medical Devices.

Marsha A. Pyle

Senior Scholar in Residence
American Dental Education Association

Dr. Marsha Pyle joined the American Dental Education Association as Senior Scholar in Residence in 2020, Senior Chief Knowledge, Engagement and Development and serves as President of the ADEAGies Foundation. She is liaison to the ADEA Council of Deans after retiring from the University of Missouri Kansas City School of Dentistry.  She served the UMKC School of Dentistry as dean for 11 years.  Prior to that, she was associate dean for academic affairs at Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine.  Dr. Pyle, a general dentist, completed a General Practice Residency and a 2-year fellowship in Geriatric Dentistry in Cleveland, OH.  She led dental curriculum innovation projects that have been nationally recognized through an American Dental Education Association Gies Award in 2009.  Using educational theory and creative practical applications, Dr. Pyle has helped transform pedagogical approaches in dental education, nationally.  Her national leadership also includes serving as chair of the (ADEA) annual session planning committee, chair of the curriculum project for older adults and the Macy curriculum projects, as well as chair of the Joint Commission on National Dental Board Examinations of the American Dental Association and served as a Commissioner of the Commission on Dental Accreditation.   Dr. Pyle completed a term as advisor of the ADEA Leadership Institute and chair of the ADEA Council of Deans Administrative Board.

Cristina Manzanares

Professor of Human Anatomy and Embryology
University of Barcelona

Cristina graduated in Medicine in 1985 in the Autonomous University of Barcelona and then moved to Louvain (Belgium) where she obtained her PhD by the Catholic University of Louvain in 1988. Associated Professor of the newly founded Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Barcelona in 1989, she was promoted to Professor Titular of Human Anatomy and Embryology in 1992. Her main research interest lies in Bone biology, especially related to craniofacial development and osteointegration, and in the improvement of the teaching of Anatomy and Embryology in dental education.

Cristina was Secretary General as well as European Affairs Officer for ADEE.

Brian O’Connell

Professor of Restorative Dentistry
Trinity College Dublin

Brian O’Connell is currently Dean of Health Sciences at Trinity College, Dublin, with a special interest biomedical education. He co-leads the oral health component of the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA), in addition to research on treatment outcomes and the use of new technology in oral health care. Professor O’Connell is a core member of the European Platform for Better Oral Health, and President-Elect of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR).

Ana López Fuentes, D.M.D., M.P.H., FACD, FICD

Professor in the Community Dentistry Section
University of Puerto Rico School of Dental Medicine

Dr. López Fuentes is a tenured Professor in the Community Dentistry Section of the University of Puerto Rico School of Dental Medicine (UPR SDM). She was the 2023-24 Chair of the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Board of Directors. Dr. López Fuentes served as Dean of the UPR SDM from 2014 to 2018 and is currently President of the Infection Control and Quality Assurance Standing Committees. Since 2006, she has been a member of the ADEA Collaborative on Dental Education Climate Assessment and UPR SDM’s ADEA Women’s Liaison Officer. She is an American Dental Association (ADA) Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) site visitor and ex-officio member/consultant to the Hispanic Dental Association (HDA) Board of Trustees. Dr. López Fuentes is a faculty advisor to the UPR SDM’s HDA and the American Association of Women Dentists Student Chapters. She served as Co-chair of the ADEA Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Committee from 2014 to 2021, on ADEA’s Annual Session Program Committee from 2018 to 2021, as Immediate Past Chair of the ADEA Section on Women in Leadership, and Councilor to the ADEA Council of Sections as the Section on Women in Leadership representative. From 2018 to 2019, Dr. López Fuentes represented the HDA in the American Dental Association Presidents’ Summit for Diversity and Inclusion. She served as a faculty advisor to the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine fellowship from 2018 to 2022. She is also a coach for the ADEA Council of Deans Fellowship Program and was selected as a participant in the 2024 Global Women on Boards leadership program.

Pamela C. Yelick

Professor, Department of Orthodontics
Tufts University School of Dental Medicine

Dr. Pamela C. Yelick, PhD., is a tenured full professor in the Department of Orthodontics atTufts University School of Dental Medicine, and also holds adjunct appointments in the Cell Molecular and Developmental Biology, Genetics, and Pharmacology Programs in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Tufts Medical School in Boston, MA, and in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, School of Arts and Sciences at Tufts University in Medford, MA.
Dr. Yelick is an internationally recognized leader in dental tissue engineering and craniofacial development, with over 80 peer-reviewed basic research publications, more than a dozen reviews, and over 200 abstracts since the year 2000. She has received national and international acclaim for her research on dental tissue and whole tooth tissue engineering and has participated in over 200 Invited Speaker Lectureships.
