Session synopsis: 

This plenary session of ADEE 2023 Delivered in Partnership with SALUD.
Join us for this panel discussion chaired by Profs Upen Patel and Prof In Schuler as they discuss  the far reaching implication of the 2022 WHO resolution and strategy on oral health with a panel drawn from oral health, medicine, student bodies and policy makers'.

Priv.-Doz. Dr Ina Schüler is head of Section of Preventive and Paediatric Dentistry at Jena University Hospital, Germany. She finished her Habilitation in 2018 at Jena University Hospital and the Master of Medical Education (MME-D) in 2017 at University Heidelberg. Her special educational research interests are Feedback, Assessment, Chairside Teaching and Entrustable Professional Activities in Dentistry. Ina's medical resaerch focusses on oral health in patients with special healthcare needs.

Upen Patel

Associate Clinical Professor & Honorary Consultant Restorative Dentistry
University of Birmingham, Dental Hospital, UK

Dr Upen Patel was appointed as a full-time Clinical Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry at the University of Birmingham (UK) in 2008. He has since completed his PhD studies, appointed lead for eLearning, Assessment and is the Deputy Head of Undergraduate Education for the School of Dentistry. He is currently training to become a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry. Upen teaches undergraduate dental students in all five years of the BDS degree programme and delivers postgraduate training for dental-care-professionals. Upen is Chairperson for the UK & RoI Dental Schools Council Assessment in Dental Education Group, a member of the Executive Committee of the Association for Dental Education in Europe and a member of the Editorial Board for the European Journal of Dental Education. Upen has led many Special Interest Groups and initiatives with ADEE and has been involved in facilitating and coordinating workshops for ADEE-ADEA collaborations. Upen is an ADEE, Executive Committee Member.

Fotinos Panagakos

Founding Dean
School of Dental Medicine at Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences in Yakima, WA

Dr. Panagakos received his DMD from UMDNJ-New Jersey Dental School (now Rutgers University School of Dental Medicine) and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from UMDNJ-Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (now the Rutgers University Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences) in 1992. In 1999, he received his Master’s in Education from Seton Hall University; in 2007, he received his Master’s in Business Administration from Lehigh University.

Dr. Panagakos served for 13 years as a full-time faculty member at New Jersey Dental School, serving in several administrative positions, including Group Practice Administrator, Director of Environmental Safety, and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs. He also maintained a private dental practice in Westfield and Newark, NJ, during this time. In June 2005, He joined the Colgate Palmolive Oral Care Clinical Research Department as an Associate Director. He worked at Colgate until September 2017, serving as the Global Director of Scientific Affairs from 2010 until he departed. In August 2018, Dr. Panagakos joined the West Virginia University School of Dentistry as the Associate Dean for Research, where he led the institution’s research efforts. From July 2020 until May 2021, he served as the Interim Dean.

Since May 2022, Dr. Panagakos has been the Founding Dean of the School of Dental Medicine at Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences in Yakima, WA. He has authored/co-author over 88 peer-reviewed scientific research articles and has co-edited three dental science textbooks. His areas of research interest include the role of inflammation in oral and overall health, the impact of nutrition on oral health and wellness, and the impact of improved oral health on overall wellness

Janusz Janczukowicz

Professor Janusz Janczukowicz MD, PhD, MMedEd is the Head of Centre for Medical Education and the Vice Dean for Education at Medical University of Lodz. He is the Chair of the WHO Academy Quality Committee and the consultant in education for WHO Europe. He is the WHO Pan-European Leadership Academy team member.

Prof Janusz is working with multiple educational organisations, including being the advisor for Association of Medical Schools in Europe (AMSE) and the AMEE Executive Committee member. He is the member of the Board of Directors of European Institute of Women’s Health. Janusz is the external expert for multiple accreditation committees and the Associate Editor of the Medical Teacher Journal.

Kenneth Anthony

Visiting Professor
University College London

Ken Eaton is currently a Visiting Professor at University College London and at the University of Portsmouth and an Honorary Professor at the University of Kent. He is also Advisor to the Council of European Chief Dental Officers and a Honorary Member of the European Association of Dental Public Health (EADPH). He is a past President of EADPH and was the first President of the Platform for Better Oral Health in Europe. From 1990 to 2002 he was a Senior Civil Servant at the Department of Health (England) and in 2007 was a Specialist Adviser to the House of Commons Select Committee’s inquiry into the NHS General Dental Services in England. He is listed by the General Dental Council as a specialist in Periodontics and Dental Public Health.

Marta Adam

European Dental Students Association

Marta Adam was born in 1997 in Zagreb, Croatia. She graduated from the School of Dental Medicine, University of Zagreb in 2022. Currently, she is working as a general dentist at a private polyclinic Aesthetica. She has joined EDSA (European Dental Students Association) in 2018, firstly as a Croatian Delegate, then as a Mobility Officer, General Secretary and now she is a President for the term 2022/2023. During her studies, she actively participated in numerous projects of the Croatian Dental Students Association. In 2021, Marta published a paper entitled "Dental Students Discomfort and Anxiety During the First and the Second Lockdown Due to COVID-19 Pandemic at the School of Dental Medicine, University of Zagreb" in the journal Acta Stomatologica Croatica and "Antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy in periodontology" in the student magazine Sonda. She also won the Rector's Awards for socially useful work in the academic and wider community on the subject of the Geronto project 2019/2020 and EDSA Meeting Zagreb and the Rector's award for individual scientific and artistic work on the topic "Effectiveness of protective splints during the procedure of endotracheal intubation" She was also awarded the special Dean’s award for international activities.

Pål Barkvoll

President
Association for Dental Education in Europe (ADEE)

Prof Pål Barkvoll is the of ADEE 2022 - 2023. Pål was Dean of the faculty of dentistry in the University of Oslo Norway 2013-2016 and 2017-2020, prior to which he was Chair, Institute of Clinical Dentistry (1999-2012). He is a board member with the Nordic Institute of Dental Materials and of the Acta Odontologica Scandinavica Society. A Professor of Oral Surgery and Oral Medicine since 1995, Pål is committed to ensure the oral health workforce the we train today is ready to meet the challenges they will face.

Rebecca Harris

Professor of Dental Public Health and Former Deputy Chief Dental Officer for England
University of Liverpool

Rebecca Harris is a Professor of Dental Public Health at Liverpool University whose research on health inequalities and health policy has been recognised as world leading with an International Association for Dental Research Distinguished Scientist award in 2020.

She has held a variety of posts in different organisations from a Clinical Director of Community Dental Services, University Professor and Head of Department of Health Services Research, as well as more recently as Deputy Chief Dental Officer for England where she provided clinical leadership for dental system reform.
