ADEE Community of practice of Wellbeing and Resilience (COPWeR) invites you to join our free webinar on 'Facilitating improvement in Wellbeing and resilience of dental students'

Join our Community of Practice membership for this informative and interactive webinar where we will discuss the important concept of dental student wellbeing and share with you some of the experiences of addressing this important factor throughout the world. Our programme includes input from colleagues in the United Kingdom, Greece and Hong Kong and we will share with you practical real world solutions and activities that have been tried and tested.

Shanu is the Director of staff and student matters, Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant and Lead for Paediatric dentistry. She has an active interest in dental education. She leads students’ pastoral care, Equality Diversity and Inclusivity and Wellbeing with the School of Dentistry Cardiff University. She is the President designate of British Society of Paediatric dentistry 2024. She was the recipient of ADEE Dental education early career award in 2022.

Maria Antoniadou

Assistant Professor
National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (GR)

Maria is Assistant Professor at the Department of Dentistry, School of Health Sciences, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, with experience in the clinical and managerial practice of Dentistry. She has been a research and clinical member in the prosthetics clinic of the University of Freiburg in Germany. She holds a Master's Degree in Aesthetic Dentistry from the University of Athens, while her doctoral dissertation was on the application of dental biomaterials in the modern practice of dentistry. She is also a Certified Systemic Analyst Professional (CSAP) following the Executive Mastering Program in Systemic Management at the University of Piraeus, Greece. She specializes in dental psychology and patient coaching and management, professional counselling, performance enhancement and dental business initiative counselling, dental management, and marketing. She is also an ACSTH by HRE certified ICF program and AC Accredited Coach. She is the author of the book “Application of the Humanities and Basic Principles of Coaching in Health Sciences” (Athens 2021, Tsiotras Ed., ISBN:978-618-5495-45-9).

Wendy Smith MBE

Strategic Lead for Community Engagement
Well Connected

Wendy Smith MBE is the Strategic Lead for Community Engagement at Well Connected, a charity based in the South West of England. She has worked closely with University of Plymouth Peninsula Dental School for many years. Wendy has developed and delivered a variety of community based initiatives and projects which raise the profile of dental wellbeing for vulnerable and disadvantaged population groups. She is hugely proud that her contribution to dental education and services to oral health promotion in the South West was recognised in 2018 when she was awarded an MBE by HRH The Prince of Wales at Buckingham Palace. Wendy is a trusted and respected charity leader who blends a practical approach to project management with humour, enthusiasm and authenticity to create award winning, innovative, and effective health improvement programmes.

Charlotte Chan

Bachelor of Dental Surgery student
University of Hong Kong

Charlotte Chan is a final year Bachelor of Dental Surgery student at the University in Hong Kong with a special interest in psychology and mental health. As a Board Member for a local mental health charity, Mind Hong Kong, she helped steer their youth mental health programmes and served as one of the lead organisers of the 2020 Hong Kong Mental Health Conference. She is passionate about understanding and improving the wellbeing of dental students which she is currently researching with her peers in a faculty-supported project.

Michael Botelho


Clinical Professor in Restorative Dental Sciences
University of Hong Kong, Faculty of Dentistry


Prof Michael Botelho has been at HKU for 27 years and has been actively engaged in educational reform, pedagogy and innovation. He has over 100 publications with 20 papers and 8 book chapters in education and 19 education grants. He has lectured and consulted in across South-East Asia and in Europe and North America. His educational research interests are related to the innovative use of video and online learning, PBL, flipped classes and closing the clinical transition gap. He has a number of teaching awards at HKU including the first Teaching Innovation Award, the Team Award and the UDTA. He is also a recipient of the UGC Teaching Award. He is currently the President-Elect of the Educational Research Group of the IADE. He is a former Regional Attaché for ADEE

Vehid Salih

Associate Professor in Oral & Dental Health Research
Peninsula Dental School (PDS), University of Plymouth

Dr Vehid Salih is Associate Professor in Oral & Dental Health Research, based at Peninsula Dental School (PDS), University of Plymouth. His research career comprises 15 supervised PhD students, +100 research publications and several book chapters. Throughout his research and teaching career, Dr Salih has mentored and guided students through anxious and stressful phases of their student experience. For the past 4 years he has been working together with Wendy Smith to develop a resilience programme for students. Dr Salih is a proactive advocate of helping students understand that their challenging courses of study are achievable with appropriate guidance and self-help strategies which will help organise their non-resilient thoughts into practical and reachable goals.

Learning Outcomes: 

From this session delegates will be able to:

  • Define resilience in the context of dental education and role of coaching in fostering resilience
  • Highlight specific coaching techniques for enhancing resilience such as goal setting, reflection, and cognitive reframing
  • Explain how these exercises simulate real-world challenges faced by dental students
  • Recognise the value of adopting positive strategies for individuals and dental care professionals of the future.
  • Explore and investigate resources both on campus as well as in the wider community which offer help and guidance.
