Statement regarding Iran

ADEE is an academic-led organisation grounded in the foundations and sound principles of the European Cultural Convention (ECC), which sets the framework of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), and the World Health Organisation European and Eastern Mediterranean regional structures.

As with the aftermath of the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, ADEE feels the need to express its everlasting commitment to its founding principles and ideals, which are aligned with the United Nations Charter, the International Covenants on Civil and Political Rights as well as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Hence, the Association for Dental Education in Europe (ADEE) wishes to express its deep concern regarding the events and social turmoil that unfolded in Iran following the death of Mahsa Amini and the dreadful and unacceptable circumstances under which that occurred.

ADEE expresses its unequivocal and zealous commitment to upholding of Human Rights and expresses strong support to the civilian population and, in particular, to the students, our academic peers and other health professionals in Iran, who may be negatively and unduly impacted by governmental actions. We received with great concern the reports that universities and hospitals and health personnel have been affected by such actions, thus compromising international principle of medical neutrality, academic freedom and Human Rights.

ADEE's commitment to diversity and inclusion shall not be regarded separately from its commitment to the support of the Human Rights of the women and men that personify the Academia and the Academic Freedom that we, as an organisation, embody.
