ADEE President Stephanie Tubert and President Elect of the ADEE Ilze Akota, accompanied by the Secretary General (Cristina Manzanares) and Executive members Barry Quinn and Rui Amaral Mendes attended the AMEE Congress which took place in Vienna in August 2019.
The ADEE representatives were able to participate in a seminar organized by the AMEE office that brought together various associations involved in the field of health professionals education. The subject was the mobility of non-European students and professionals within the EU.
ADEE presented at this session the procedures for the recognition of dental diplomas in Europe as well as the modalities of registration and authorisation to practice for non-European dental practitioners.
Questions emerging from the subsequent discussion revealed a shared concern over the way foreign students are welcomed and enrolled in Higher Education, the quality of training or the harmonization of the procedures for recognising graduates' skills. The debate that followed after the various oral presentations showed that further discussions and exchanges are needed in the future. The executive also had the opportunity to meet and discuss with the AMEE president and executive.
Similar to last year, ADEE representatives also held the ADEE@AMEE meeting, which is aimed to bring together people involved or with an interest in Dental Education. The meeting was joined by colleagues from Slovenia, Australia, Portugal and Mozambique. The active participation of colleagues from Portuguese-speaking countries enabled a fruitful discussion regarding the potential collaboration between ADEE and some African countries. Prof. Maria Amélia Ferreira, who chairs the local organising committee of ADEE meeting in Porto in 2021, expressed her commitment to use Porto’s meeting to foster the engagement with Portuguese speaking countries and Latin-America.
Dr Barry Quinn was also invited to chair and moderator a session at AMEE and was on the judging panel for best simulation publication of the year.
The ADEE executive have been very much interested by the AMEE program that integrated key notes about the Threshold concept and transformative learning. The congress gathered 3000 delegates from many countries worldwide with a main theme "the patient as educator".
While attending AMEE, the ADEE delegation took advantage of continuing its discussions with Advance HE around collaboration and fellowship opportunitites for European Dental Faculty. A futher update on this will issue shortly.
