ADEE's annual recognition ceremony: Early and Mature Career delivered in association with Dentsply Sirona
Session synopsis: 

Every year ADEE makes time within our annual meeting to recognise and reward colleagues for their achievements and excellence in the provision of dental education. Focusing on the categories of Early Career and Mature Career educators, we select examples of excellence through our self and peer nominations process. Following evaluation individuals who can clearly demonstrate the advancement of their career against the predefined criteria are presented to delegates at our annual meeting. The session is chaired by Dr Ronald Gorter ADEE Editor in Chief and will last approximately 60 minutes. So please join us in recognising our colleagues for their excellence in Dental Education.

Mr Jonathan Dixon

University of Sheffield, United Kingdom

Mr Jonathan Dixon, Clinical Academic Fellow in Restorative Dentistry at the University of Sheffield United Kingdom is being recognoised with an ADEE 2021 Excellence in Dental Education Early Career award for 2021. Jonathan is Clinical Academic Fellow in Restorative Dentistry at teh University of Sheffield. He attained his Bachelor’s Degree in Dentistry with Honours from Universidad Cardenal Herrera, Valencia, Spain with distinctions in numerous subjects, including: Conservative Dentistry, Endodontics, Periodontics and Prosthodontics. After qualifying as a dentist he worked in a variety of dental settings in the UK before starting his role at the University of Sheffield in 2017. He has experience dentistry and dental eductaion in a wide variety of European settings including the UK, Spain and Sweden.

Dr Charlotte Emanuel

Cardiff University, United Kindgom

Dr Charlotte Emanuel, Director of Assessment, Senior Clinical Lecturer in Oral Surgery at the University of Cardiff United Kingdom is being recognoised with an ADEE 2021 Excellence in Dental Education Early Career award for 2021. Following completion of her specialist training in Oral Surgery Charlotte became more involved in the education and development of Undergraduate and Postgraduate Dental Students, hoping to inspire the next generation of Academic Oral Surgeons. She developed and teaches students in simulation and chair-side diagnosis and management of oral disease. Charlotte became the Director of Assessment, September 2021, which she says has been an exponential and exciting learning curve, managing assessment development and anxieties across undergraduate and postgraduate education during the Covid-19 pandemic.  

 

Dr Nathan Moreau

University of Paris, France

Dr Nathan Moreau, Associate professor (Tenured) in Oral Medicine and Oral Surgery, University of Paris, France is being recognoised with an ADEE 2021 Excellence in Dental Education Early Career award for 2021. As an academic Oral Surgeon with a special interest in Orofacial pain, he has dedicated most of his clinical, teaching and research activities to the -still insufficient- diagnosis and management of orofacial pain conditions and related disorders. This includes the creation and management of the orofacial pain diagnostics unit of Bretonneau Hospital, the training of undergraduate and postgraduate dental and medical students on the subject of orofacial pain and translational research on trigeminal neuropathic pain. Such academic activities provide an opportunity for integrative curricular development both in the faculty and hospital settings as well as interdisciplinary and interprofessional collaborations.

Dr Fabio Savoldi

University of Brescia, Italy

Fabio Savoldi graduated from the Dental School of the University of Brescia (UniBS), obtained his specialist degree in orthodontics from the same University, and pursued his PhD at the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Hong Kong (HKU). He served as president of the Brescia section of the Italian Association of Dental Students, undergraduate representative in the Board of the Dental School (UniBS), postgraduate representative in the Board of the Faculty of Dentistry (HKU), postgraduate representative in the Policy Board of Postgraduate Education (HKU), and vice president of the Postgraduate Student Association (HKU). He is currently Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Faculty of Dentistry of HKU and Tutor for undergraduates at the Dental School of UniBS.

Dr Igor Blum

Kings College London, United Kingdom

Dr Igor Blum, Reader in Primary Care Dentistry and Clinical lead/Consultant in Restorative Dentistry, Kings College London UK, is being recognoised with an ADEE 2021 Excellence in Dental Education Mature Career award for 2021. Igor Blum qualified from Semmelweis University, Budapest, in 1995. Following graduation, he completed an MSc in Oral Surgery and a PhD in Restorative Dentistry at the University of Manchester. Whilst doing his PhD in Manchester Igor also completed a Dr med dent degree at the University of Frankfurt, Germany in 2002. Following several years in general dental practice Igor completed the membership examination of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. In 2005 Igor was appointed Clinical Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry at the Bristol Dental School where he also completed the 5-year higher Specialist Clinical Training Programme in Restorative Dentistry. In 2013 he was appointed Consultant/Hon. Senior Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry at King’s College Hospital.  

In 2018, Igor was appointed as Reader at King’s College London. He completed an MA in Education in 2021.

Dr James Field

University of Cardiff

Dr James Field, Director of Learning and Teaching, University of Cardiff, United Kingdom is being recognoised with an ADEE 2021 Excellence in Dental Education Mature Career award for 2021. James Field is currently a Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry, and also the Cardiff University School of Dentistry's Director of Digital Education. He is a long term active member of ADEE having most recently co-chaired the very successful Bridging the Clinical Gap special interest group and workshop. James is academic lead for the ADEE European DigEdDent (Digital Education in Dentistry) portal, was lead author for the ADEE's Graduating European Dentist Curriculum Taskforce and Global lead for Shaping The Future of Dental Education: Interprofessional Education stream. He also represents Cardiff University as the trans-national partner in O-Health-Edu, an Erasmus+ K2 project to harmonise dental education across Europe.
