Session synopsis: 

Liverpool University Dental Curriculum offers a shared curriculum for the first 3 years.
Join us in this session where we share experiences of introducing and implementing this approach and the benefits it offers to students and inter professional practices.

What are Dental Therapists and where did they come from?
We will review the development of Dental Therapy in the UK, the current scope of practice of Dental Therapists and their role in the dental team, including barriers to their effective use.

A new curriculum
We will present the history of dental hygiene and dental therapy education in Liverpool, the drivers for producing a new, collaborative, curriculum and the aims of that curriculum.

We will present the theoretical considerations that underpin the curriculum, including assessment, and describe how the curriculum was “built”.

Vince Bissell

Dean, School of Dentistry
University of Liverpool

Professor Bissell graduated BChD from the University of Leeds in 1985 and PhD from the University of Edinburgh in 1995. He joined the University of Liverpool having been appointed Dean of the School of Dentistry in December 2017. He had previously been Deputy Head of School at the University of Glasgow Dental School, where had also held a chair of Restorative Dentistry and Dental Education. He is an Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry with Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, with a particular interest in Periodontology. His time is now spent largely on management and leadership of the School, although he continues to teach, contribute to educational research and maintain an active clinical practice. Professor Bissell is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a member of the Executive Committee of the Faculty of Dental Trainers of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Laura Gartshore

Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry
University of Liverpool

Dr Laura Gartshore is a Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry at the University of Liverpool School of Dentistry, where she became Undergraduate Programme Director in 2019. Laura completed the RCS England Lady Estelle Wolfson Emerging Leaders Fellowship in 2018-2019. Following this, Laura has taken up opportunities to work with RCS England and WinS as a speaker, mentor and educator.

Laura has published her experiences of the Emerging Leaders Programme with advice on how to make the most of it in the RCS England Bulletin, 'From Fellowship to Leadership' and for the RCS England 'Choose to Challenge' initiative earlier this year. Laura has presented widely as an invited speaker about the challenges faced in leadership and about how we can all choose to challenge these. She has an active interest in gender bias in our professions and in our supporting each other to access leadership opportunities.

Joanne Bowles

BSc Dental Therapy Programme Director
University of Liverpool

Joanne Bowles is a Dental Therapist, Senior Lecturer and the BSc Dental Therapy Programme Director for the fully integrated and innovative BDS/BSc curriculum at the University of Liverpool, School of Dentistry. Joanne is an executive council member for the British Association of Dental Therapists where she now has a role as BADT Secretary.
