Session synopsis: 
A meeting of the ADEE Community of Practice on Students as collaborators, partners and educators.

Working with ‘students as partners’ is gaining acceptance, and interest is shown in continuing to develop the concept. Dentistry has many topic areas that lends themselves to the use of these educational methodologies to the benefit of both staff and students.

Healey (2019) defined 4 areas of student engagement through partnership, namely teaching learning & assessment, subject based research, scholarship of teaching and learning, and curriculum design. In addition to updating delegates on last years’ progress on co-creation and peer assisted learning(PAL), this session will explore new areas of interest in relation to staff student partnerships.

The objectives are:

  • To outline the developments in ‘Students as partners’ with particular reference to peer assisted learning, co-creation and students’ contribution to the wider environment
  • To elicit delegates’ perspectives on students’ partnerships in research and assessment
  • To consider the role of staff-student partnerships in relation to developing areas such topics such as equality, diversity and inclusion, and stress and resilience

ADEE CoP Chair and lead for Dental Educational Research and Scholarship
University of Glasgow Dental School, UK

Dr Viv Binnie is a dental senior lecturer, and lead for Dental Educational Research and Scholarship at University of Glasgow Dental School. She teaches public health/behavioural sciences including communication, across all five BDS years. Formerly a tobacco researcher, her current interests lie in dental educational research particularly around student engagement, peer assisted learning (PAL) and staff student partnerships (SSPs) and student motivation as defined by self-determination theory (SDT). She has published widely and recent publications are involved with assessment & feedback and non-technical skills. She supervises in the field of health professions education, at doctoral/masters level. She is a senior fellow of the HEA, and president-elect of BARDES (British Alliance for Research in Dental Education and Scholarship).

Prof Michael Botelho has been at HKU for 27 years and has been actively engaged in educational reform, pedagogy and innovation. He has over 100 publications with 20 papers and 8 book chapters in education and 19 education grants. He has lectured and consulted in across South-East Asia and in Europe and North America. His educational research interests are related to the innovative use of video and online learning, PBL, flipped classes and closing the clinical transition gap. He has a number of teaching awards at HKU including the first Teaching Innovation Award, the Team Award and the UDTA. He is also a recipient of the UGC Teaching Award. He is currently the President-Elect of the Educational Research Group of the IADE. He is a former Regional Attaché for ADEE

Alison Cairns

Director of Dental Education
University of Glasgow

I am the Director of Dental Education at the University of Glasgow. I am a Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry. I have a masters degree by research on a topic I have taught widely on, regarding the role of the dental practitioner in Child Protection. I have a PhD in the field of dental education and staff development. My current areas of interest in dental education research include students as partners, peer assessment,  student engagement and the digital transformation of teaching and assessment. I am an experienced teacher at undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing development levels. I have a strong record in scholarship and in the support and mentorship of junior staff. I have collaborated nationally and internationally. I have the award of Recognition of Excellence in Teaching at a senior level. I have major roles I relation to management and curriculum development. I have fulfilled lead roles in Conference organisation for BARDES (ADEE partner in UK) and sit on the current Executive Committee. I have presented at ADEE conferences and have co-presented as well as contributed to the ‘Students as Partner’ Community of Practice.
