Workshop: Intraprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice in European Dental Schools
Session synopsis: 

The goal of Intraprofessional education (IPE) is to bring various professional groups together in a shared educational environment to promote collaborative practice (CP) and improve patient health care. In many countries, teaching of dental hygiene students takes place separately from the teaching of dental students, often with limited or no interaction at all between these two student groups. This is unfortunate and counterproductive as there is a considerable curricular overlap of dental hygiene and dental programmes which lends itself to an effective ‘dental team’ teaching approach in an interprofessional environment; thereby facilitating interprofessional collaboration and the concept of team training from early on in dental/dental hygiene education. It is therefore hypothesised that the promotion of a shared teaching approach of dental students and dental hygiene students to deliver an integrated team based educational experience enables interaction with each other in terms of direct communication and treatment planning, let alone practising effective shared patient care during training.

Quantitative and qualitative data on IPE and CP teaching and experiences were collated through a questionnaire delivered to attendees of the Association for Dental Education in Europe (ADEE) annual conference in 2021. Qualitative data were collected via three focus groups at the conference, each discussing a particular theme. The questionnaire and conference were delivered online via Google Forms and MS Teams respectively. Quantitative data were analysed descriptively, qualitative data were analysed narratively, and both were triangulated.

42 questionnaire responses were received from respondents from 18 countries within Europe and beyond. The respondents reported having a variety of roles in their dental schools. Whilst there was conformity on the benefits of IPE and CP, the findings indicate that IPE and CP have only become established in a limited number of countries, predominantly at preclinical level. Marked variations were observed in most countries regarding the teaching and practise of IPE and CP, particularly in relation to simulation and clinical teaching. Barriers to IPE and CP included logistics of bringing different programmes together, teaching taking place at different sites, timetabling challenges, funding issues, and staff adaptability.

The primary aim of this Special Interest Group (SIG) Workshop is to report the findings of a mixed methods study on aspects of IPE and CP as a modern dental team based alternative approach to the isolated teaching of dental students and dental hygiene students in European countries. The secondary aim is to collate new and more detailed data on IPE and CP to gain a deeper understanding into the practice of and barriers to IPE on an international level.

Yvonne Nyblom

Past President
European Dental Hygienist Federation (EDHF)

Ms Nyblom qualified as a dental assistant in 1977 and as registered dental hygienist from Luleå Healthcare College in 1981. Following several years in private and public oral healthcare as an employee and as an independent practitioner Ms Nyblom was holding a position as public dental clinic coordinator in the late 1990s.

During her professional life Ms Nyblom was actively engaged in the Swedish Dental Hygienist Association (SDHA) and helped with the development of the dental hygienist profession. Following the role as chairman of the Gothenburg branch of the SDHA she became member of the board of the SDHA and became its president in 2008, a position she still holds. In addition, Ms Nyblom is the international director in the International Federation of Dental Hygienists (IFDH) and during 2010-2013 she chaired the Education and Research committee of the IFDH.

The SDHA became a member of the European Dental Hygienist Federation (EDHF) in 2011, and in 2012 Ms Nyblom became the president of the EDHF. Since 2021 past president, now engaged in different projects within the Federation.

The raising of awareness about the role of dental hygienists and striving to harmonise dental hygienist education in Europe has been the key focus of Ms Nyblom as EDHF president. This resulted in the 2020 EDHF publication of the Common Education Curriculum for dental hygiene in Europe.

Igor Blum

Professor in Primary Care Dentistry & Advanced General Dental Practice

Igor Blum is the Maurice Wohl Professor in Primary Care Dentistry & Advanced General Dental Practice at the Faculty of Dentistry, Oral and Craniofacial Sciences, King's College London and Head of the Departments of Restorative Dentistry and Primary Dental Care at King's College Hospital Dental Institute, London. Igor is also Director for Dental Outreach Education at King's College London. He has lectured widely, both nationally and internationally, and has authored over 70 papers in peer-reviewed journals and five book chapters. Igor is Editor-in-Chief of the Primary Dental Journal, the official publication of the College of General Dentistry, and he is the recipient of the 2021 ADEE Mature Educator Award recognising individuals' Excellence in Dental Education.

Clare McIlwaine 

Director of the BSc Dental Therapy and Hygiene programme
Kings College London, UK

Miss Clare McIlwaine is a dental therapist and has been involved in dental education for over 10 years. In this time, she has implemented two BSc Dental Therapy programmes, successfully integrating teaching and assessment in the curricula where a therapists and dentists Scope of Practice are shared.

Clare completed a Master’s in Clinical Education in 2017 and received the ADEE Oral B Inter Professional Educator Award in 2019. She is currently the Director of the BSc Dental Therapy and Hygiene programme at Kings College London.

Clare is passionate about shared teaching, learning and assessment, and actively advocates IPE and teamwork within dental education and the profession.

Chris Louca

Director and Head
University of Portsmouth Dental Academy

Professor Chris Louca BDS, BSc, PhD, AKC, FFD RCSI, FCGDent is the Director and Head of the University of Portsmouth Dental Academy. He is responsible for the undergraduate and postgraduate education of dentists, dental therapists, dental hygienists and dental nurses, with a strong emphasis on intra-and inter-professional learning. Chris has over 30 years’ experience of teaching, research, innovation and international accreditation/consultancy in dentistry. His previous academic posts include King’s College London and UCL Eastman Dental Institute. He has supervised 8 PhD and over 90 MSc students and his current PG students are researching topics in dental education, dental public health, and dental materials. He presents his work regularly at the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) and Association for Dental Education in Europe (ADEE) and other international conferences. Chris has published over 90 original articles in dental peer reviewed journals. He received the ADEE Mature Career Dental Educator Award in 2015.

Anthony Roberts

Professor/Consultant in Restorative Dentistry
Cork University Dental School and Hospital, University College Cork, Ireland

Anthony Roberts is a Professor/Consultant in Restorative Dentistry and holds a particular interest in Dental Education. He is Head of Restorative Dentistry and Academic and Clinical Lead for the Dental Hygiene Programme and Vice Dean for Learning and Teaching at Cork University Dental School and Hospital, University College Cork, Ireland. Anthony is also the Chair of Education and Training for the Dental Council of Ireland.

Albert Leung

Professor of Dental Education and Head of Continuing Professional Development
UCL Eastman Dental Institute, UK

Professor Albert Leung BDS LLM MA PhD FGDSRCSI FDSRCS FDSRCPSG FFGDP FHEA, is Professor of Dental Education and Head of Continuing Professional Development at UCL Eastman Dental Institute, UK. He is the Immediate Past Dean and Dental Projects Lead for the Faculty of Dentistry of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

Professor Leung is Academic Lead and Chief Examiner in Clinical Skills (Dental Manikin) for the UK General Dental Council’s Overseas Registrations Examination (ORE). He has supervised over 90 MSc dissertations at UCL Eastman Dental Institute and has a strong academic practice profile in four continents. He has an extensive and successful innovative leadership in change management portfolio. He presents and publishes his pedagogic work widely.

Professor Leung received the Association of Dental Education in Europe (ADEE) Mature Career Dental Educator Award in 2017.

Barry Quinn

Chair in Restorative Dentistry & Dental Education

Professor Barry F.A. Quinn, Chair in Restorative Dentistry & Dental Education, Academic Lead for Restorative Dentistry, University of Liverpool, School of Dentistry. Barry is presently Secretary General of the Association Dental Education in Europe (ADEE), President of the British Alliance for Researchers in Dental Education and Scholarship (BARDES), co-President of the Dental Teachers of Professionalism in the UK and a past President of the Education Research Group (ERG) of the International Association of Dental Research (2018-2020) and metropolitan branch of the British Dental Association (2017). In 2017, Barry was the main lead for the Shaping the Future of Dental Education world workshop held at King’s College London.

At the University of Liverpool, Barry leads the integrated teaching of restorative dentistry for the collaborative learning core for the interprofessional education of dentist and dental therapy students. Barry is a past recipient of the ADEE mature educators award (2013) and interprofessional educators award (2016) and the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) emerging leaders. Barry’s main research has included interprofessional education, haptic virtual reality surgical skills education and has won many UK and international awards as well as having over 170 refereed publications and abstracts.

Alaa Daud

Assistant Professor of Restorative Dentistry
College of Dental Medicine, Qatar University (QU)

Dr Alaa Daud is currently an Assistant Professor of Restorative Dentistry at the College of Dental Medicine, Qatar University (QU). In addition, she is an Honorary Research Fellow with Bristol Dental School, UK. She is the Dental College Lead for Continuous Professional development and Interprofessional Education. She is instrumental in building the dental curriculum and formulating assessments for the newly established College of Dental Medicine at QU and the MSc in Health Professional Education.

She is part of different teams successfully winning multiple grants at QU. Dr Alaa obtained her Masters of Science degree in clinical dentistry from Bristol University, UK, in 2009, where she later progressed to a Senior Lecturer in restorative dentistry. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Faculty of Dental Trainers and continuous to serve as a lead examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

She has published a Dental Restorative book, authored and co-authored multiple peer-reviewed scientific papers. Her academic and research career is decorated with several reputed teaching & learning awards and recognitions.

Learning Outcomes: 

This SIG workshop aims to:

  • Promote IPE to dental health professionals responsible for and involved in the education of dental students, dental hygiene students and policy makers
  • Identify and implement teaching methods and projects that advance the goal of IPE to improve team based education and quality of shared patient care
  • Provide a forum for educational support and exchange of experience about IPE, including assessment, evaluation, and related research, within ADEE and with other national and international organisations involved in medical and dental education
  • Furthering the educational objectives of the SIG via ADEE meetings, annual reports, journal publications and workshops at ADEE conferences.
