ADEE2024 Plenary 3: AI as an enabler of sustainability

Session synopsis: 
A.I. when effectively used can reduce waste and error, enable easier access and add to a more sustainable practice environment be it academic or clinical. Through this theme on day three we will showcase some examples from industry as well as academia on how A.I. is help make sustainability achievable. 

Francesco Gallo, Senior Director of Global AI Strategy and GM of Henry Schein One Italia, Kopfwerk and Orisline Portugal, will delve into the current applications of artificial intelligence in the software industry. He will discuss how AI is augmenting human capabilities by automating manual and repetitive tasks and leveraging data to improve performance and achieve sustainability goals. The presentation will cover several areas, including software applications, operational optimization, and energy efficiency improvements. In addition, he will explore how AI can transform the "patient digital experience" in dentistry, paving the way for a more advanced, patient-centered, and efficient healthcare system.

Francesco will then be joined by a panel of invited speakers from ADEE corporate partners to further explore A.I. in oral health education settings and how the future might look.

This session will conclude with the presentation of the 2024 Oral Health Professional Educators’ ‘Practice Green©’ Awards.

Professor in Restorative Dentistry and Dental Education
Cardiff University

Prof James Field is currently a Professor in Restorative Dentistry and Dental Education and also the Cardiff University School of Dentistry's Director of Digital Education. He is a long-term active member of ADEE having most recently co-chaired the very successful Bridging the Clinical Gap special interest group and workshop.

James is academic lead for the ADEE European DigEdDent (Digital Education in Dentistry) portal, was lead author for the ADEE's Graduating European Dentist Curriculum Taskforce and Global lead for Shaping The Future of Dental Education: Interprofessional Education stream. He also represents Cardiff University as the trans-national partner in O-Health-Edu, an Erasmus+ K2 project to harmonise dental education across Europe.

Sibylle Vital

Professor of Pediatric Dentistry
University of Paris

Professor Sibylle Vital graduated from the University of Paris Descartes in 2003. She completed a PhD in Oral Biology at the University of Paris Descartes in 2006 and a post-doctoral work at the University of California, San Francisco, USA in 2007. She is a full-time Professor of Pediatric Dentistry at University of Paris. From 2013-2016, she was head of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics and she is currently Vice Dean for Academic Affairs. She serves on the review board of the EJDE since 2014. Active member of ADEE since 2010, Sibylle is a member of the ADEE Executive Committee.

Francesco serves as Senior Director, Global AI Strategy and General Manager for Henry Schein One's branches in Italy, Austria, and Portugal. With over 25 years of experience in the technology sector, Francesco has built a distinguished career ranging from independent entrepreneurship to prominent roles in multinational organizations. He previously held the position of Director of Innovation and Strategy and Board Member at NPO Sistemi S.r.L., part of the Ricoh Group, where he demonstrated considerable competence and vision in leading innovative initiatives.

Nagham Katif

Lecturer in Technical Prosthodontics
Cardiff University, UK

Nagham is a Lecturer in Technical Prosthodontics, Sustainability Lead, Chair for the Digital Workflow Teaching Group, and AI Champion at the School of Dentistry.

She graduated from the Dental Technology Program at Karolinska Institutet in 2002. She has worked as a dental technician and a CAD/CAM product specialist. She also has over 14 years of teaching experience in the Dental technology and the Dental programmes. Nagham is particularly interested in education, sustainability and digital workflows. Currently, she is focused on developing digital teaching, and methods for embedding sustainability practices as part of the training of future oral health professionals.

Joerg Vogel has served as Vice President International Sales of former Sirona since 2004 with responsibilities for the markets in Asia/Pacific, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, CIS, Middle East, Africa and Latin America. Since 2010 he has concentrated on the Asian Pacific and Latin American market and since 2015 on the International Special Clinic Sales worldwide.

Between 1992 and 1997, Joerg Vogel was COO at Draeger Medical Japan and continued his operations in 1998 as COO in Singapore for the Asian Pacific region.

Between 1999 and 2002 Joerg Vogel took over the responsibilities for Draeger Medical as Regional Manager for the whole Asian Pacific region and relocated back to his home town Lübeck. In 2003 Joerg Vogel took over the responsibilities of the Division Manager IT at Draeger Medical in Boston/USA.

Joerg Vogel holds Diploma of Industrial engineering at the University in Hamburg.
