Session synopsis: 

This is a follow up workshop to the ADEE 2021 session on The Complexity of Assessing Professionalism.

We will aim to set together shared values which define standards and expectations in Professionalism for our students. This will serve as basis for the 2nd phase of the workshop working collaboratively on management of lapses in Professionalism.

Breakout sessions will allow for participants to discuss vignettes illustrating these common lapses.

From the work in the breakout sessions we will establish a shared repository of common lapses in Professionalism and agreed approaches in their management.

Speakers: 

Amitha Ranauta

Head of Centre for Teaching and Innovation
Institute of Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London

Amitha qualified as a dentist from Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry in 1996. Whilst working in general dental practice, she pursued her special interest in ethics and law by completing her Medical Law degree at Cardiff University in 2000. She completed the Communication Skills Teaching Programme at the University of Cambridge in 2011.

Amitha successfully completed her PhD thesis, ' Professionalism in the dental undergraduate curriculum', in 2016. Her research interests are the development of professionalism and ethics , reflective practice and the role of patient feedback.

Amitha is the Head of Centre for Teaching and Innovation at Institute of Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London. She is the module lead for teaching of professionalism and communication Skills. She has been appointed as an honorary lecturer of the Faculty of Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons. She has been appointed as GDC Education Associate and sits as Chair for the GDC’s Fitness to Practice procedures adjudicating matters on clinical and professional misconduct.

Patricia Neville

Lecturer in Social Sciences
Bristol Dental School

Dr Patricia Neville is Lecturer in Social Sciences at Bristol Dental School. She is Theme Lead for Personal and Professional Development(PPD) and Ethics, Law, Professionalism and Social Accountability(ELiPSA) in the undergraduate curriculum. She is a sociologist with research interests in the sociology of oral health, healthcare professions and professionalism and equality and diversity issues in dentistry.

Kirsty Hill

Head of School
University of Birmingham

Professor Kirsty Hill is Head of School for the School of Dentistry and leads the educational and research developments within the School. This role involves implementing University policies and practices in relation to academic quality and standards. Kirsty has wide experience of teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and a strong academic background in Dental Public Health, Law and Ethics and Behavioural Science. In the area of behavioural science her research interests include dental anxiety, psychological treatment of gagging patients, training needs of GDPs in treating anxious dental patients and workforce stress.

Aengus Kelly

Clinical Lecturer in Dental Education
Peninsula Dental School in the University of Plymouth

Dr Aengus Kelly is a Clinical Lecturer in Dental Education at Peninsula Dental School in the University of Plymouth. In this role he is co-Lead for Professional Development for the BDS and BSc (Hons) Dental Therapy & Hygiene undergraduate courses. His research interests include clinical communication, dental education and inter-professional learning. He is the UK Deputy National Representative for the European Asssociation for Communication in Healthcare (EACH) and is on the teaching faculty for the dento-legal indemnifier Dental Protection.

Sally Hanks

Professor of Primary Care Dentistry and Associate Head of School (Teaching & Learning)
University of Plymouth Peninsula Dental School

Professor Sally Hanks is Professor of Primary Care Dentistry and Associate Head of School (Teaching & Learning) at the University of Plymouth Peninsula Dental School, UK. Her work in curriculum development and professionalism links to that on capability and leadership, and the ethos that education should be authentic to best support and empower graduates to be prepared for the real world of dental practice. She founded and was inaugural chair of the UK Council for the Dental Teachers of Professionalism. Sally is deeply embedded in the teaching of professionalism in the UK dental education sector, is interim president of the British Society of Clinical and Academic Hypnosis (BSCAH) and council member for the Hypnosis and Psychosomatic Medicine section of the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM).

Melanie Nasseripour

Dr Melanie Nasseripour DDS, MSc, PhD is a Reader in Ethics and Dental Education at the Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences, King’s College London. She is Module Lead for Dentistry In Society and co-Lead for Professionalism. Her main research interests are in the field of Ethics, Professionalism, Conservative and Minimal Intervention Dentistry, in particular as applied to oral health education and assessment. She has been teaching for over 15 years in both Undergraduate and Postgraduate Dental Education supervising clinical care, masters and PhD level research projects as well as being module lead in the Advanced Minimum Intervention Dentistry MSc programme.

Barry Quinn

Chair in Restorative Dentistry & Dental Education

Professor Barry F.A. Quinn, Chair in Restorative Dentistry & Dental Education, Academic Lead for Restorative Dentistry, University of Liverpool, School of Dentistry. Barry is presently Secretary General of the Association Dental Education in Europe (ADEE), President of the British Alliance for Researchers in Dental Education and Scholarship (BARDES), co-President of the Dental Teachers of Professionalism in the UK and a past President of the Education Research Group (ERG) of the International Association of Dental Research (2018-2020) and metropolitan branch of the British Dental Association (2017). In 2017, Barry was the main lead for the Shaping the Future of Dental Education world workshop held at King’s College London.

At the University of Liverpool, Barry leads the integrated teaching of restorative dentistry for the collaborative learning core for the interprofessional education of dentist and dental therapy students. Barry is a past recipient of the ADEE mature educators award (2013) and interprofessional educators award (2016) and the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) emerging leaders. Barry’s main research has included interprofessional education, haptic virtual reality surgical skills education and has won many UK and international awards as well as having over 170 refereed publications and abstracts.
