Session synopsis: 
In late 2023 the European Federation of Periodontology held its annual workshop in Madrid Spain with a specific focus on updating evidence-based consensus on education on periodontology.

These new curriculum guideline once published will set the baseline for education in periodontology in the European education context and ADEE was honoured to be invited to actively participate in this update. 

This session will provide delegates with an update on the new curriculum guidance, share the rationale behind its development and discuss how the concepts can be integrated within individual institutional curriculum. The session is delivered with the support and collaboration of EFP colleagues.

David Herrera Gonzalez

Chair of Periodontology, and Associated Dean for Clinics
University of Madrid (UCM), Madrid, Spain.

David is a full professor and Chair of Periodontology, Associated Dean for Clinics, at the Faculty of Odontology, Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), Madrid, Spain. He is also a co-director of the Graduate Program in Periodontology (UCM), accredited by the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP). He serves as Chair of the European Workshop Committee of the EFP (2020-today).

He has previously held positions as President of the Spanish Society of Periodontology (SEPA, 2013-2016), President of the Continental European Division (CED) of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) (2019-2020), President of the Periodontal Research Group (PRG) of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) (2020-2021) and a member of the Global Periodontal Health Project (GPHP) Task Team of the FDI World Dental Federation (2016-2022).

He scientific activity and interests are in periodontal and peri-implant diseases (Etiology, Therapy, Microbiology and Antimicrobials): He has more than 180 scientific publications in JCR journals.

Katleen Vandamme

Professor of Restorative Dentistry – Implant Prosthodontics
KU Leuven, Belgium

Katleen is professor of Restorative Dentistry of the Department of Oral Health Sciences at the KU Leuven Belgium, where she is involved in undergraduate and postgraduate education and training in oral implantology. She also holds the position of Coordinator of the Institute of Osseointegration KU Leuven. Her research interests include evidence-based dentistry,  mechanobiology in implant osseointegration, bone biology (in particular impaired bone conditions such as diabetes), skeletal tissue engineering, and teaching modalities and analytics. Katleen is president of BVOI/SBIO (Belgische Vereniging voor Orale Implantologie/Société Belge de l’Implantologie Orale), Education Delegate of the International Team for Implantology (ITI) BeLux. Katleen is a member of ADEE's regional council and is the chair of this year’s ADEE local organising committee.

Nikos Donos

Director of Research, Professor & Chair of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry

Professor Nikos Donos (H index 62 – July 2024) is the Director of Research, Professor & Chair of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry, at the Centre for Oral Clinical Research (COCR), Institute of Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London (QMUL).

In 2024, Prof. Donos was awarded the prestigious IADR Distinguished Scientist in Periodontal Disease Award and the EFP Distinguished Scientist Award. In 2011, he was presented with the IADR- Periodontology Group award in Periodontal Regenerative Medicine and in 2019 the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) Clinical Research Award for his contribution as co-author. In 2004, Professor Donos received the European Association of Osseointegration (EAO)- Basic Science Research Award.

In 2009, Prof. Donos has been awarded the title of Honorary Professor at the Faculty of Dentistry in Hong Kong, in 2012 the title of Adjunct Professor at the Dental School-Griffith University in Australia, in 2015 the title of Honorary Professor at UCL-Eastman Dental Institute and in 2019 the title of Honorary Professor, School of Dentistry, University of Queensland, Australia.

Professor Donos is Past President of the British Society of Periodontology & Implant Dentistry (BSP) (2020), the Academic Representative of the Committee of the Association of Dental Implantology (ADI)(UK) and is a board member of the Osteology Foundation (OF)-Switzerland where he also is the Chair of the Science Committee (for OF). Furthermore, Professor Donos is the Lead of the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) Education Committee (PEC).

Prof. Donos is the Associate Editor for Periodontology 2000, a topic editor (2022) for Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology and is/has been involved as editorial board member in international peer-reviewed journals in the field of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry.

Prof. Donos has published more than 275 peer reviewed publications, is the editor of 5 textbooks and author/co-author of 15 book chapters in the field of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry.

Prof. Donos is/has been involved as reviewer/participant in most of consensus conferences for the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP), the European Association of Osseointegration (EAO), The International Team for Oral Implantology (ITI) and the Osteology Foundation.

Wim Teughels

Prof. Wim Teughels received his dental degree in 2000 from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KULeuven) in Belgium. In 2006, he earned the degree of specialist in periodontology and successfully defended his doctoral dissertation at the same university. In addition, he earned the “European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) certificate in Periodontology. Currently, he is a full professor at KULeuven and the University hospitals Leuven, where he is the head of the Periodontology and Oral Microbiology research group. In 2012, Professor Teughels is appointed associate editor for both the Journal of Periodontal Research and the textbook "Carranza's Clinical Periodontology." He is the co-director of the EFP- post-graduate education committee, an advisor for the EAO Consensus Conference committee, and the Ambassador for the ITI University Campus program. He holds visiting professorships at Cukurova University (Turkey) and Malaya University (Malaysia).

France Lambert

Professor and Head of the Department of Periodontology, Oro-dental Surgery and Implant Surgery
University of Liège in Belgium

Prof. France Lambert graduated in dentistry in 2002 and completed her post-graduate program in Periodontology at the University of Liège, Belgium in 2005. Thereafter, she received a 1-year ITI scholarship to expand her education in implantology at Harvard School of Dental Medicine and defended her PhD thesis on regenerative biomaterials in 2011 while acting as a Head of Clinic at the University of Liège. Currently, she is Professor and Head of the Department of Periodontology, Oro-dental Surgery and Implant Surgery (https://www.uperio-liege.be) at University of Liège in Belgium and the director of the EFP-accredited post graduate program in periodontology and implant dentistry. She is also the co-director of the dental Biomaterials Research Unit (d-BRU) (https://www.d-bru.uliege.be). Her clinical activity is exclusively dedicated to periodontology and implantology and her research focuses on the validation of innovative protocols in implant dentistry, hard and soft tissue regeneration, and the development of smart regenerative materials. France Lambert is the Past President of the Belgian Society of Periodontology (2013- 2016), Delegate at the European Federation of Periodontology (since 2017), Chair of the ITI Belux section (since 2017) and an Affiliate of the European Academy of Esthetic dentistry (since 2013). She is also a member of the ITI Research Committee (since 2021) and was a member of the Expert Council of the Osteology Foundation (2015-2019). She is lecturing internationally and is the author of numerous scientific articles and acts as a reviewer for several journals in her field

Véronique Christiaens

Professor - Department of Periodontology and Oral Implantology
Ghent University

Prof. dr. Véronique Christiaens was born in Ghent, Belgium, in 1988 and obtained the degrees of Master of Science in Dentistry (2012), Master of Science in Advanced Dentistry specializing in Periodontology (2015), and Doctor of Health Sciences (2017) at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Ghent University. Véronique was appointed as Professor at Ghent University in September 2021.

Currently, Prof. Véronique Christiaens teaches periodontology, oral implantology, and multidisciplinary treatment planning at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She is co-director of the Graduate Program in Periodontology by the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) at Ghent University. 

As a board member of the Belgian Association of Periodontology and member of the European Association of Osseointegration and the European Federation of Periodontology, she follows the latest developments in periodontology and oral implantology closely. Within these domains, she is (co)author of several publications in international journals.
